California health officials see new COVID-19 variant in more cases

A new variant of the COVID-19 virus is showing up in rising numbers of cases, officials from the California Department of Public Health, Santa Clara County and UC San Francisco announced Sunday.

The variant, which has previously been detected in other countries and states, is now increasingly being found in multiple counties throughout California, health officials said in a news release.

“It’s too soon to know if this variant will spread more rapidly than others,” Dr. Erica Pan,  an epidemiologist for the California Department of Public Health, said in a statement.
