New Zealand in lockdown over first COVID infection in 6 months

New Zealand was ordered into a strict nationwide lockdown Tuesday — after just one COVID-19 case was detected.

It was the first locally transmitted infection in the community in six months.

“The best thing we can do to get out of this as quickly as we can is to go hard,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said in a televised national address.

“We have seen what can happen elsewhere if we fail to get on top of it. We only get one chance,” she insisted.

Florida sets new daily high for COVID infections

Florida continued to set records for COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations Sunday with federal agencies reporting that an additional 25,991 people had tested positive and nearly 16,000 were hospitalized for treatment of the deadly disease.

Since the highly contagious delta variant of the coronavirus began sweeping the state last month, Florida has led the nation in the number of new cases.

The additional infections the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported late Saturday is a 4.5% increase since the previous daily high of 24,869 cases was reported Wednesday. The state reported nearly 152,000 new cases for the week.

Midland County becomes COVID hotspot for infections

MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) -Midland Memorial Hospital has moved to daily briefings on the local spread of the coronavirus as infection rates skyrocket here in West Texas.

Hospital leaders said the COVID situation has become so dire; Midland County has become a new hotspot in Texas for infections.

Just this past weekend, over a dozen COVID-positive patients, were admitted at one time.

“This is a viral hot zone. It is spreading very rapidly through our community, and everyone here around is at risk,” said Chief medical officer Larry Wilson.

COVID-19: Long Island Sees New Infection-Rate Jump; New Breakdown By Community

The positive COVID-19 infection rate on Long Island took another jump over the weekend as local, state, and federal officials continue attempting to corral more transmissible variants of the virus that have been mutating and rapidly spreading.

On Long Island, the average seven-day COVID-19 infection rate among those tested held steady at 3.69 percent on Friday, Aug. 13, and Saturday, Aug. 14 before jumping up to 3.84 percent on Sunday, Aug. 15. 

As recently as three weeks ago, the infection rate was closer to 2 percent.
