COVID-19 infection rate in children continues to soar in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — As state legislators spent much of Tuesday debating whether or not face coverings are worthwhile in school, the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department released some sobering statistics about COVID-19 infections they are seeing in children ages 5-17.

During the month of July, Lexington saw 271 cases, that’s an increase of 240 from the month of June. Through August 16, the department has reported 221 cases and we’re only halfway through the month, with many schools just getting underway.

As a point of comparison, on the same date in July, the department reported 101 cases.

Abbott tests positive for COVID-19 breakthrough infection

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, his office announced.

The governor’s office said it got the positive result after Abbott, who is fully vaccinated, underwent his routine daily testing. Column: Funds sell oil as coronavirus infections rise: Kemp

LONDON, Aug 16 (Reuters) – Hedge funds sold petroleum last week for the sixth time in eight weeks as resurgent coronavirus infections in China, Europe and North America dampened hopes of a rapid resumption in long-distance passenger aviation.

Hedge funds and other money managers sold the equivalent of 64 million barrels in the six most important petroleum futures and options contracts in the week to Aug. 10, exchange and regulatory records showed.

Total sales over the last eight weeks have been equivalent to 213 million barrels, with most selling occurring in crude (-183 million) rather than refined products (-29 million).

Classes in high-infection areas to study remotely unless 70% of kids vaccinated

In a bid to encourage vaccination and reduce contagion among high schoolers when the school year opens on September 1, the government announced on Monday a new school-opening plan for high-contagion areas that will see classrooms with low levels of vaccinated students switch to online remote learning.

Under the rules of the new plan, approved by the cabinet on Monday evening, only classrooms in which over 70 percent of students are either vaccinated, recovered or pass a positive serological test for antibodies will be allowed to meet in person.
