Metabolism Mysteries – Great Moments In Science

Dr Karl: G’day, Dr Karl here.

It always comes as a bit of a shock to realise that something you always thought was true turns out to be wrong. I’m talking about “metabolism”…you know that thing responsible for making you pile on the kilos as it apparently slows down with every passing birthday.

It turns out that’s wrong! It doesn’t actually slow down with age…well not by much anyway. And the long-held belief that women have slower metabolisms than men – wrong too!

So, let’s look at the history of Metabolic Science.

We have always known that breathing is

Metabolic Changes in Plasma, Immune Cells Linked to Covid-19 Severity: Study

Bozz District

Covid-19 patients have differing immune responses that lead to disease outcomes ranging from asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection to death. After examining the blood samples from nearly 200 Covid-19 patients, researchers have uncovered underlying metabolic changes that regulate how immune cells react to the disease. These changes are associated with disease severity and could be used to predict patient survival. The findings were published in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

“We analysed thousands of biological markers linked to metabolic pathways that underlie the immune system and found some clues as to what immune-metabolic changes may be pivotal in severe disease,”said Jihoon Lee, a

Duke professor’s study finds metabolism does not slow with age, instead ‘four distinct metabolic phases in life’

It is not often that newly-published peer-reviewed research gets spoofed on late night television, but that was the case for a recent study by Herman Pontzer, associate professor of evolutionary anthropology and global health.

Pontzer was watching The Late Show with Stephen Colbert when he heard a joke referencing his ground-breaking new study on human metabolic rates.

“A new study finds that your metabolism doesn’t slow down in your middle age,” Colbert joked. “But I have a report of my own: yes it does.”

The findings revealed that contrary to popular belief, which suggests that our metabolism slows down in

We know that there are a range of immune responses to COVID-19, and the biological processes underlying those responses are not well understood. We analyzed thousands of biological markers linked to metabolic
